The origin of flowers goes back in history - almost 130 million years - to flowering plants. According to David Dilcher, a paleobotanist, “The first flowering plants didn't resemble any flowers we know today. They didn't have petals, they didn't have fragrance, they weren't beautiful. They simply were functional.” Over time the interaction between insects and plants evolved and created what we know now as flowers: fragrant, edible, beautiful and colorful.
This collection of flowers started many years ago and has taken me all over the United States, from Pennsylvania to Oregon and to many gardens right here in Louisiana. Matching a flower to it’s correct botanical name is one of the first steps in my editing process. You’ll often see a flower’s name in Latin listed with their genus and species, family and common name. For example Magnolia Grandiflora is the Southern Magnolia. Many flowers also take on beautiful and sometimes mysterious special meanings. In this collection, you'll find:
Daisy: innocence, purity, loyal love
Hydrangea: heartfelt emotions, perseverance
Magnolia: nobility, dignity
Poppy: consolation, imagination
Rose: love, passionate love (red); admiration, perfect happiness (pink)
Tulip: hopelessly in love
I hope you’ll find a flower or a meaning that speaks to you. I would love to share my passion for flowers with you through one of these photographic prints.
