Companion to Birds in Paradise
These images of birdhouses are miniature Victorian, architecture. The doors stay open, as the embossed birds are free.
In Victorian England, it was popular to keep small terrariums or large aviaries with exotic animals. Victorians called them “Paradises”.
Thus the titles “Birds in Paradise”, “Birds in Eden”.
The beadwork was a popular pastime for women in the Victorian era as well. The feminine aesthetic emerges again in to my etchings.
I draw directly on the copper plates and handprint my etchings. I bond cloth to the back of the paper using archival glue. My sisters are hand stitching the beads according to their own design.
Each is a one of a kind.
Photographs to show the fine stitching on the back of each etching are attached to each piece.
You will find two signatures, my own and my sister, Elizabeth Carrere.
Hand printed intaglio print from a copper etched plate produced by the artist on archival paper bound to a cloth backing using the etching press.
Hand-stitched by Elizabeth Swigart with silver and turquoise glass beads sewn with silk thread.
Some beads are prominent, others hardly noticeable. I enjoy the gleam and sparkle they add to the surface of the etching. They reflect changes in lighting, giving some element of surprise.

Atelier Frances Swigart has been a source for me as a designer, an architect, and a collector for 40 years. I create original work, both prints and paintings. I print and sign each limited edition. These are traditional intaglio and relief prints, not reproductions. Most are on handmade paper, often water colored. My paintings are oil on gold and silver, and copper leaf on wood.
Frances Swigart is a New Orleans artist living and working in the East Carrollton neighborhood.
