My name is Kersey (It's like Jersey with a K). I'm a cartoon. I create illustrations, write children's books, and make little mini movies here and there. I love music, art, animation, movies, friends and New Orleans.

What would you call this? This? My art?
Yeah, what would you call it? Uncanny Cuteness!
Totally! They are so imaginative, where do you come up with your ideas? Everywhere! From feelings being felt, to music being heard. To the conversations I have with friends and strangers. Inspiration is a funny thing. It’s not something you really can search for, it always just seems to find you.
There seems to be a story in each and every one of your drawings. Do you illustrate children’s books? I not only illustrate them, I write them too. I’m a double threat! I have three books so far. Children’s books is a medium that I hold very dear to my heart. I don’t believe it should be limited to just children, but to adults too. I find that most people have idea’s for children’s books floating around their noggins. I think its something that everyone should try doing at least once!
How do you make your work? What materials do you use? Its just pen and ink. Sometimes I incorporate colored pencil and paint, or even photoshop, but rarely. Copic pens are my favorite. I’ll draw a pencil sketch first then fill it in with in and color. Everything kinda comes out of nowhere. Everything that I plan in my head doesn’t come out as good as it does on the paper.
Are you from New Orleans? No, I grew up in the Bay Area.
Then why New Orleans? New Orleans is the best place in the world. I love it here. There’s no place I’d rather be.
Who are your influences? Good question! Some of my favorite artist are Shel Silverstein, Edward Gorey and Norman Rockwell. I’m also really inspired by musicians too. Story tellers like Woody Guthry, Loretta Lynn, and Neil Young. Tom Waits has a really big affect on me. All played a part of my growing voice.
That makes sense. You can really see the musical themes in your work. Music is EVERYTHING! I’m constantly asking my friends about new music to discover. So what I’m listening to is ever changing. Discovering new music is such a fun process. Right now I’m really into finding more girl bands. But my favorite records to listen to when I’m drawing are Benjamin Clementine’s “At Least for Now,” and Minnie Riperton’s “Come to My Garden.” That album is perfection! Music is really important to my art. I try to make as much noise as possible with my drawings. Color helps with that.
What else do you do aside from making art? Writing, lots of writing. Learning to play guitar (nosiey storyteller). I’ve been trying to get back into animation recently, making some short films. It’s exciting!
What more can we expect from you? More Children’s books, more comics, and more animations!
