Armstrong developed his cornet playing skills by playing in the band of the New Orleans Home for Colored Waifs, where he had been sent multiple times for general delinquency. Armstrong got his first dance hall job at Henry Ponce's, where Black Benny became his protector and guide. He hauled coal by day and played his cornet at night.
Armstrong was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1972 by the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
“The Gospel According to New Orleans” my collection of iconic New Orleans musicians commemorates their role in the evolution of the eccentric culture and music traditions of New Orleans. All depicted in this series are musical and cultural icons who make or live on through their significant contributions to the uniqueness of what composes the spirit of New Orleans.
They exemplify the joie de vivre that runs through all aspects of life here in all of its diversity.

I feel fortunate to be able to share my love of New Orleans through my paintings. I feel like I was separated from this city at birth and that I came home when I moved here in 2009. I am in love with this colorful city that continuously entertains, amuses, and inspires me with its deep, rich history, architecture, people, amazing music, and unique neighborhoods, each with a very distinctive flavor. I also find inspiration in sentimental objects and little altars everywhere in my home, which is a sacred space to me.
My paintings are done in the studio primarily from photos I take constantly while making my way around town, usually preferring the path less traveled. In my series “The Gospel According to New Orleans”, New Orleans musicians and culture bearers portrayed as Byzantine Saints, I use as many as 20 images to uniquely create each “Saint” in this collection. In addition to this series, I’m currently working on: “Portraits of Airstreams”, “Nothing But Blue Skies” -my take on New Orleans architecture, “Preservation” -what’s worth preserving in this region in Victorian era cloches, and “Channelling Klimt”.
My work is in private collections in 14 states, D.C., Puerto Rico and in the permanent collection of the new LSU Health Sciences Center. I was recently selected for the Bywater Biennial, curated by Don Marshall, a Prospect 4 Satellite exhibit as well as a Prospect 4 Satellite exhibit curated by Where Y’art. My work is featured on the cover of the latest issue (April 2018) of Iron Lattice, an arts and culture publication.
My intention is that you can experience joy, amusement, sentimentality, and some lesser known places in New Orleans and a few points beyond from these paintings.
I am a New Orleans artist living and working in the Uptown area.
