Ellen Macomber

Artist + Ellen Macomber

I am a practicing artist in New Orleans. My work has been shown in galleries and is featured in corporate and private collections throughout the United States.

As a native of south Louisiana, I was raised on the water. Maritime charts and topographic maps have always been a part of my family’s culture. The natural beauty of the landscape was a primary influence in my development and creativity. After graduating from LSU with a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design, I left Louisiana to travel internationally and cultivate my skills.

Painting and drawing have been expressive outlets for me throughout my life. For the past several years, I have been creating mixed media pieces using reclaimed windows, wood, glass, fabric, acrylic paints, and gold leaf. Maps and linear forms, especially bridges and architecture, are the primary motifs in my work, inspired by cartography, the natural and urban geography of Louisiana and other parts of the world.

When I returned to New Orleans in 2002, and I established myself as a fashion designer. Offering unique garments for local boutiques and individual clients, my love of travel, unusual textiles and rich color combinations fueled my interest in fiber art and fabric design. My years of creating original fashion have fused with my stylized cartographic and architectural renderings to become dynamic textiles. My unique graphics are digitally printed on organic fabric made in the USA with non-toxic, eco-friendly, water-based pigment inks. The art textile collection is sewn locally and includes clothing, home décor, and furniture.

Ellen Macomber Fine Art and Textiles, is my independent retail space, opened in December 2015 in an ideal location of the historic St. Charles Streetcar line, at 1720 St. Charles in the Lower Garden District. With paintings, apparel, home furnishings and paper goods, the gallery is the perfect place for tourists and locals alike to find innovative New Orleans art for any occasion.
