Cheniere Au Tigre is a small island off the coast of Vermilion Parish that borders the Gulf of Mexico and can still only be reached by boat. Reportedly, the name comes from the killing of a large cougar there in the early 1900s. There was a community living there with a school, a church, and a cemetery which was supported by a resort and beaches which many vacationers from all around would visit. By 1957, most of the community had moved away when Hurricane Audrey hit and most of the structures on the Island were destroyed.
My dad grew up in Pecan Island and has told me a few times about visiting Cheniere Au Tigre as a kid and about the ruins of the old resort and I always found it pretty fascinating. I would love to visit it one day.
