Follow this artistAs a performance artist, I produce work on Frenchmen street. I've been painting "live" this way for over 15 years, traveling from place to place, settling in New Orleans in 2012. The process of working around an audience has been interesting, I find that I've become an aggressive painter but this has helped me develop a recognizable technique, which is a good advantage. Over the years I began to compose backgrounds rather than starting from a blank canvas. The backgrounds are either layers of poured paint or an abstract painting which I can utilize to develop the overall feeling of the piece. This field of color and/or form helps build the character which eventually plays into the portrait. This practice provides a much broader spectrum for my creativity to take place. Typically, I like to finish a piece in one sitting, letting spontaneity run its course. I think the resulting portraits are much more exciting with the action of the brushwork being the main focus, capturing the persons likeness a close secondary quality but equally important for the whole success.
