Muffin Bernstein

Artist + Muffin Bernstein

I was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. My latest series of medallions are a combination of isolated moments as well as newly collaged landscapes. With this work, I want to highlight the importance of nature and it’s beauty. Nature’s cycle of death and renewal is a continual source of inspiration for me. It is remarkable what I have seen on my daily nature walks with my husband and dogs. Though I have experienced a few setbacks in my journey as an artist, including health complications and an apartment fire destroying my catalog work, nature has given me the will and inspiration to continue creating.

Within my photographic collages, I strive to convey the transformative and healing power of nature, as well as themes of rebirth and reawakening. Other driving forces behind my art consist of the rising sea level and the dangers presented by coastal erosion. I use my photographs of nature in hopes of visually preserving an ecosystem that is likely to one day vanish. I hope that the beauty I have captured inspires others to hold nature in reverence. I believe that it is our responsibility to do something, big or small, to contribute to the health of our ecosystem, locally. Small acts like planting more milkweed for monarch butterflies and wildflowers for bees, make all the difference.

Muffin Bernstein is a New Orleans artist living and working in the 7th Ward.
