This original lumen print is part of my ongoing Victorian Mourning series, inspired by Victorian Mourning traditions of the 19th century. It combines Louisiana flora & foliage with lace, representing the Victorian custom of using flowers as expression and evoking the many traditions entrenched within our southern culture. In New Orleans and South Louisiana, we use our traditions not just to commemorate, but to celebrate the past, the future, and most especially – the present. For this print, no natural flora was used, it is more of a reflection on the human element of our natural & impermanent experience. This series is also inspired in part by the thoughts & reflections on life and death from Joseph Campbell and this quote from the Power of Myth:
“the spirit is really the bouquet of life”.
That we are mortal, that we rely on death to survive, and that we are in a constant state of change, is fact. How we view and act upon the fragile life we inhabit is entirely up to us. What lives and blossoms for future generations is our spirit. With respect to the thoughts of Joseph Campbell, the customs of my native Louisiana and to the origins of photography, also established in Victorian times, I created this series of Lumen prints, an early photographic process using (mostly) organic objects as subjects and the sun as developer.
Each piece will arrive signed on the back, unmatted, unframed and carefully packaged to ensure proper delivery. Please note there may be a slight color shift due to monitors/calibration.

Follow this artistI am a photographer, songwriter & performer living in New Orleans. My photographic works use a variety of mediums - lumen printing, a 19th century photo process, 35mm and digital photography - 20th and 21st century processes respectively. My photographic adventures began with 35mm film in 1999. I learned how to shoot by how to print so the two go hand in hand for me. I quickly became interested in alternative styles of printing. Years later, inspired by the need to recycle the boxes of expired photo paper tucked away in my kitchen cabinets, I began working with the lumen print process where sunlight is used to imprint the subject onto photographic paper. I hooked from the first print I made.
At the root of all of my work is my worldview. From the tiniest twig to the largest tree the natural world is a source of inspiration for me. As the world becomes more and more modernized, I often find myself in nature connecting and recognizing humankind's place in this world. With this thought in mind, I use lumen prints to create a true impression of our world, as is.
As a songwriter I write and perform songs that tell the tale of the world as I know it, creating narratives that merge my photographs and songs into a one-woman multimedia performance, the most recent being a chronicle of my Louisiana World Tour and based on my blog, "The State of My World".
Natasha Sanchez is a New Orleans artist living and working in the Lower Garden District neighborhood.
